DILEMMAS IN LIFE, PART ONE -- ASKING A GUY OUT
I understand that it's really no big deal in this day and age, but there is just something extraordinary about a girl asking a guy out on a one-on-one date, even if it's just for casual 'coffee' or a 'movie'. And despite what everyone else says (men who proclaim on forums online that it is a huge turn-on when a girl makes the first move, your friends who remind you that life is short and you should totally GO FOR IT, and the whole 'oh well at least I tried' consolation when things don't go your way, blah blah), taking the initiative to ask a guy out is, in my opinion, a very daunting task.
First, I am someone who absolutely subscribes to the "Be a man; take initiative" philosophy (sorry, still quite old-fashioned here). I strongly believe that men should definitely OFFER to pay for the first date (even if he doesn't pay for the entire outing eventually, but please offer to do so, goddammit), hold the door open for the lady, or prove his gentlemanly qualities such as letting the lady walk ahead of him or texting to ask if she got home safe, so on and so forth... which is why I also think that it is more 'proper' for the man to do the asking-out, for the first time at least. But of course, it doesn't always happen, so we go on about how girls in the 21st century can take the initiative to ask a guy out, too. And although we talk so much about male-female equality these days, I find it difficult to accept that, YES, girls can make the first move too, without them having to over-analyse the situation.
Why, then, is it so bloody difficult to muster that courage to get a guy to go out with you? I mean, if the terrifying R word (i.e. REJECTION) is what we girls say we are afraid of, isn't it the same for guys? Does it necessarily mean that men swallow rejection better than women do?
Of course I can't say that this applies to all the women out there, but for me at least, if the guy is not making the first move to ask me out, then he probably is not interested anyway. So why bother going to all that trouble, mustering all that courage to put myself out there, only to receive that dreaded SMS reply, "Hmm, how about some other time? :)" (and of course we know that there will most probably NEVER be "some other time") Why yes, then there is the argument that the guy could be shy and afraid of asking, too. But then again, WHY should I even think about going out with a guy who isn't manly enough to ask me out?!
I could go on forever about this issue/debate on girls making the first move, but I guess I can only conclude now that -- girls, if the guy you fancy hasn't asked you out yet, then the guy most probably doesn't feel the same way, and if he is just TOO shy to do so, you shouldn't consider going out with a guy like that anyway. SERIOUSLY.
Or perhaps... he already has a girlfriend and has yet to ask permission from her if he can meet up with a "pretty" female friend for casual coffee.
WTF.
